Edge Case : Azure AppFabric and BizTalk Adapter Pack

Reecently I came across one of those “It works on my PC” moments. Even worse, My other PC was similiar to my other PC. Same OS, Same CPU model and similiar software. The problem? Installing the Windows Azure AppFabric SDK onto my Windows 7 Laptop.  The install process would get about 80% complete and then roll back with error status 1603.

The Event Viewer did not yeild anything of use, infact the only entry about this was;

Windows Installer installed the product. Product Name: Windows Azure platform AppFabric SDK V1.0. Product Version: 1.0.1006. Product Language: 1033. Manufacturer: Microsoft Corporation. Installation success or error status: 1603

Bing etc.. did not come up with any results and no error logs were saved. I then found a nugget on how to add verbose output to the MSI installer process. Once enabled a fairly useful debug log was created.  It turns out the AppFabric install was failing with this error.

CAQuietExec:  RelayConfigurationInstaller.exe Error: System.Configuration.ConfigurationErrorsException: An error occurred creating the configuration section handler for system.serviceModel/bindings: Could not load file or assembly ‘Microsoft.Adapters.Sql, Version=3.5.0.0, Culture=neutral, PublicKeyToken=31bf3856ad364e35’ or one of its dependencies. The system cannot find the file specified

Ah Ha, from memory these were releated to the BizTalk adapter pack. This was installed however so I had no idea why this was causing an issue still as the files do exist. ?

The problem is the Adapter pack is x64 and  the AppFabric is x32 so it is looking for x32 versions of these files which do not exist. So…. to resolve, install the x32 version, comment out the Adapter entries within your machine.config file or uninstall the adapter pack. You can choose what option suits you best depending on your requirements.

Hope this helps.
